He may no longer reside in Wairarapa but Stu Smith clearly still has plenty of friends here. A fundraising dinner has been organised for the former Wairarapa-Bush lock with all 120 tickets now sold. The dinner, on the eve of the Hurricanes versus Chiefs match at Mangatainoka, has been organised by friends of the affable Smith following news of his diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND). A neurological condition, MND causes the progressive degeneration of specialised nerve cells, called motor neurons, in the brain and spi- nal cord. It has no known cause and no treatment will significantly alter its course. Smith, 33, is married to Kelly and has three children, Georgia, 5, Molly, 3, and Cohen, 1. Former Eketahuna and Wairarapa-Bush team-mate Steve Olds says he last saw Smith in October when he came down from Waipukarau to tell him the news of his ill- ness. He s a terrific bloke and was a fantastic team mem- ber, Olds says. But this is more about Stu being a husband and father to three young kids. We all just feel so helpless. Olds says Smith won t be attending the dinner. He s a really proud guy and probably won t want people to see him in his state. The fundraiser, at Copth- orne Hotel and Resort in Masterton on February 15, will feature an interview ses- sion with Hurricanes players. There will also be an auction with a range of items going under the hammer. With tickets costing $130 each, a significant sum of money has already been raised. Olds is hoping that the auc- tion will generate a lot more money, all of which will be passed on to Smith and his family. Donations can also be deposited directly into a bank account set up for the Smith family. To make a donation contact Steve Olds: 027 595 3387 or 06 375 8060. Smith played 44 games for Wairarapa-Bush in the early 2000s and was a member of the Eketahuna side which dominated club rugby over the period. He moved to Nelson in 2005 and played 11 games for Tasman.
