The Wairarapa Championships are the last chance for Wairarapa swimmers aged 12 and under to qualify for the State 2013 New Zea- land junior championships at the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, Kilbirnie, on February 16 and 17. Wairarapa already has strong rep- resentation in this prestigious nat- ional event, with Zachary Hullah, Will McMaster, Jessie Parker, Tom Parker, Robert Rossiter-Stead and Dallas Swaneveld from Carterton Swimming Club and Mitchell Cock- burn, Oliver Donaldson, Noemi Lein- fellner, Kate Sims, Eternal Thomp- son and Mika Tobias from Masterton Swimming Club. The older swimmers will be striv- ing to secure qualifying times for the Mayfair Pools 2013 New Zealand Age Group Championships to be held at the end of February, the State 2013 New Zealand Open Champion- ships in March and the State 2013 division two competition which takes place in Invercargill in April. With many swimmers having already rea- ched the qualifying standard for these national meets, Wairarapa swimming will be well represented across the board. Results from the Wairarapa cham- pionships will be available on www.swimwairarapa.co.nz and will be published in next week s Wai- rarapa News. Lee's swing claims day Record breaker: Masterton-Eketahuna Pro-AM champion Richard Lee, orange, with his Wairarapa Texel Amateur Team, placed fifth. From left, Mike Dixon, Kevin MacKay and Derek Clarkson. Knight golfers: Sir Richard Hadlee and Sir Brian Lochore both played in the two-day tournament. An eight birdie blitz by a North Harbour golfer at Masterton s Pro-Am tourna- ment set a new course record, catapulting him to the win in the event. Richard Lee s round consisted of nine threes and nine fours, his 63 going with the earlier Eketahuna round of 66, for a total of 129. Lee, who won the 2009 Masterton Eketahuna pro-am, also holds the official Eketa- huna course record of 62. In a generous gesture, Rich- ard donated back $500 of his winnings to pay the entry for a team of juniors to partici- pate in the 2014 event, includ- ing his caddie, Jack Forrester from the Masterton Club. In second place and two shots behind Lee was Daniel Pearce on 131. A further three shots back was Kieran Muir, of Omokoroa, with a combined total of 134 who took out third place from Jared Pender on 137. On the Friday night a packed clubhouse was enter- tained by Sir Richard Hadlee, guest for the weekend. Sir Richard told many amusing stories, gave his views on the current cricket situation and answered ques- tions from the floor. The amateur team was a closely fought affair with the Pea Straw Man team of Phil Rutene, Susan Rutene, Leith Comer and professional Daniel Pearce taking out the title on the cut from Pacific Hygiene Limited -- Peter Kenny, Dave Cameron, Roger Allan and professional Luke Nobilo and the PGG Wright- son team of Gavin Harris, Simon Buckley, Ray Verhaart and professional Tony Christie. The weekend was a great success with the major spon- sors DHL Global Forwarding and Recreational Services reconfirming their sponsor- ship for 2014 and announcing an additional $5,000 for the professional purse in an effort to continue to attract top Kiwi professionals.
