In a region where primary industry still reigns supreme, an initiative promoting top quality lamb products is being welcomed on many fronts. As part of this year s inaug- ural Shear Fest, the Master- ton A & P Society is hosting the show s Gate to Plate con- test. It is a chance to sample some of New Zealand s best lamb cooked by leading Wai- rarapa chefs. Participating farmers enter two prime lambs in the week before the show and they are judged on the hoof, on the hook, then on the plate. The long-term goal is to make it into a major feature of the show, A & P Society president Allan Williams said. This year we are just feel- ing our way a little bit in terms of how to run the com- petition so it will be quite a steep learning curve for us, The lambs on the hoof are being judged on Sunday, February 10 at the showgrounds. The livestock is then taken to the Cabernet Foods plant at Gladstone for processing, after which, the meat will be judged on the hook. Several Wairarapa res- taurants are putting their chefs forward to take part in the Lamb Three Ways compe- tition on the day of the show. They will take different cuts from the lambs and prepare them using three different methods. This will constitute the third part of the compe- tition which goes towards finding an overall winner of Gate to Plate. There are also prizes for each part of the competition. The Lamb Three Ways seg- ment will be held in a food court set up near the No 1 Trades Hall in one of the busiest parts of the showgrounds. Live lambs will be on dis- play here as well. Other show attractions The Masterton A & P Society has booked some lively attractions for its February 15 to 17 event at the Solway Showgrounds. The Rough Riders Stunt Show is back with its unrivalled stunt riding. When last in Masterton, three years ago, the riders white-knuckle antics caused a few hearts to miss a beat during their performances. One joker came off and broke an ankle, another joker got concussed -- talk about rough riders, said Ally O Neill of Masterton A & P. This year s show will also feature a few clowns. The Clown Experience will put on three shows a day around the showgrounds. Ronald McDonald is also going to be around with his truck. Mr Stilman, who has been a popular feature of the show previously, returns with his inimitable form of entertain- ment. Horse, livestock and home industries entries for the show close on January 30. There is still space available for trade exhibitors. Home Industries Section Get your entries in as soon as possible for the cooking, spinning and weaving, arts and craft, sewing, knitting, embroidery, cheese, preserves, jams, vegetables and flowers. The WBS $100 fruit cake section is always very popular with a man winning it last year. There are several interes- ting categories in the arts and craft section: JNL is sponsor- ing the Primary and Inter- mediate Environment Mural (2m by 2m); recycling with milk bottles (primary); tin cans (intermediate); making something from dad s work- shop (college students); while adults are free to submit any- thing. College students also have a wearable art section. Entries close on Tuesday, February 5. For further details phone 06 377 546.
