A Relay for Life stalwart for sev- eral years, Gary Brooks will himself be among those being remembered at next month's fundraising event. Mr Brooks died of cancer in April last year aged 51. His dad, John, died three months later, also of cancer. Gary Brooks had been a steadfast supporter of the Cancer Society-backed fund- raising event. His former boss Roger Southey, of Southey's Auto World, has many fond memories of Gary. The business has participated in every Relay for Life since the event's inception. Gary first got us involved because of my own wife [Nicky] who died from cancer,'' Roger says. Southey's Auto World won't be entering a team in next month's relay but staff will be involved in one form or another, he says. Gary's brother Tod says the wider family is entering two teams -- the Brooks Battlers and Team Brooksy. Tod says the family battled through last year with the loss of John and Gary and have put together these teams in their memory. Tod plans to have his head shaved on the eve of the Relay for Life in awareness of the mongrel disease and in respect of my bro''. He also encourages people to make a donation to the Wairarapa Cancer Society. Relay for Life -- overnight on Saturday, February 23, at Queen Elizabeth Park in Masterton. It starts in the even- ing and ends the following morning. The light and dark- ness of the day and night paral- lel the physical effects, emotions and mental state of a cancer patient while going through their cancer journey. More than 50 teams have registered. You can get your own team together and make the commitment to having fun and helping a worthy cause. Brooks Battlers have organised a fundraising Snooker Tournament on February 17 at the Masterton Cossie Club.
