One of the standout perfor- mers of the enormously popu- lar New Zealand's Got Talent television show, Mihirangi Fleming, is coming to Wai- rarapa to share her uniquely loopy stylings. Employing the use of elec- tronic looping with her sing- ing and percussion to creating amazing songs that wowed the country's television audi- ence, her powerful live sound is set to stun those planning to see her at the Horse Shoe in Masterton on January 26. NZGT may have catapulted the singer into the main- stream, but as a professional musician she is no stranger to performing. She has five world tours under her belt and has spent a lot of time playing overseas. The Masterton stop is part of her Somebody Shake the Tree Tour which includes 45 concerts. She started the tour just after Christmas and has played all around the North Island since. She says it has been a great way to see the country and to catch up with friends and relatives. We're absolutely loving it. It's been incredible. We've had some really great gigs, we've done some sold-out shows and been to some beautiful pla- ces,'' she says. Mihirangi's sound can be described as soulful world roots and loops. Her single No War is an up- tempo dance song about the war of global resources par- ticularly in pristine world environments; and Greed,a version of the original to appear on her forthcoming album. She says she hesitated to enter NZGT but she's glad she did. It was a really good choice,'' she says. A bubbly personality who has a great stage presence, Mihirangi gave me heaps about not voting for her on NZGT when I admitted I was one of the three New Zealand- ers who didn't watch it. Mihirangi: You didn't even vote for me bro.'' Me: I know I didn't, I'm sorry.'' Mihirangi: I'm hanging up now.'' Me: I'm a bit tight with my telephone charges anyway.'' Mihirangi: That's all right, all my cuzzies were like, aww, we've got no credit',''. Accompanied by drummer Waka Peri on this tour, Mihi- rangi is used to playing a solo show, but that wasn't always the way. She was part of an 11-piece when she was perfor- ming, but she got to a point where she couldn't afford to pay that many people. She discovered a friend's loop pedal and started experiment- ing on it. Not long after, she started doing solo shows. Mihirangi is rounding off her New Zealand tour with two concerts at WOMAD in New Plymouth in mid March.
