Steve and Mary Blakemore's Gypsy River Camping is a won- derful surprise nestled in beside the Ruamahanga River at Home- bush, a couple of minutes east of town. The three purpose-built caravans situated in their own peaceful camping ground are all charm with more than a sprink- ling of luxury. The secluded spot, easy access to a private stretch of river and a host of little touches make a stay here a truly unique Wairarapa experience. The Blackmores recently invited our family to test-run the facilities. With two adults, three small children and Grandma, we were the ideal party to make use of this new hospitality venture. Steve built the caravans himself using overseas designs and an old shepherds' hut for the cookhouse and bathroom The two accommodation caravans are new -- one in gypsy- caravan style and the other a shepherd's hut.
