Stinging nettle: Rich in iron and vitamin C and an energy booster. Cleavers: A cleanser that helps rid the system of waste products. Should you be stung by a sting- ing nettle, find some ribwort and rub the itching area. Cleavers Cleavers are a well-known weed, commonly known as a climbing plant and for how sticky the plant is. Ms Sutherland said the plant is good as a tea for cleansing the body, and helping rid your sys- tem of waste products. It helps you regenerating and being healthy. Especially in spring and summer, that's when it's prolific and grows every- where. You can get the fresh tops and pop them in a salad. It's the fresh, green part of it you want.'' The plant can also be placed in a jug of water and left over- night, and then drunk in place of water. It can help people to lose weight, and Ms Sutherland said Maori used to use the plant to treat cancer and tumours. Basic skin balm recipe Calendula can be used to make a basic skin balm, ideal for inflammation. Place dried flower petals into a jar and cover them with almond oil, or olive oil. Leave the jar in a warm place for four to six weeks out of direct sunlight. Ensure the plant material is covered by the oil the entire time. Strain the oil into a pot and heat by placing the pot into a larger pot of water. Add10to40percentbeeswax depending on desired consist- ency. Heat until melted. Pour into clean, dry jars. Label, date and store in a cool, dark place. Ali Sutherland makes her own herbal products from items in her Otaki Gorge garden. She has been studying herbal medicines for about 20 years, and often teaches at Edible Backyard workshops. Her products can be bought from the Levin Mall Pharmacy, Steeds Pharmacy in Levin, or by contacting her at firstname.lastname@example.org.
