Anew business, a new partner and a new season . . . Masterton's Scott Miller has every reason to feel optimistic about the coming drag racing series. He took his top fuel dragster to Taupo last week and returned reasonably happy with progress after a couple of frustrating years. He still has dreams of hit- ting the magic 200mph and becoming the fastest Ford out- side the States. At Taupo he was third fastest of eight entrants but still with some problems. Too much fuel was being delivered to the engine, something that will hopefully be sorted by the instal- lation of a new magneto. That should bring times backs from 7.5s at Taupo to around 7.2s at Masterton next month. A new business, at the rear of the Solway Service Station and a new partner, Kathryn (Kat) Penfro, have also been exciting developments for Scott. Kat, director of Scott Miller Motors, who hails from Tennes- see and has been in New Zea- land for five or six years, brings with her a 1992 Chev Camaro, which will also be running at Masterton. She won't be at the wheel, however. Her job is back-up'' girl, whose job it is to run after the reversing car after a burnout, signalling to the driver which way to steer. There's a third Miller entry for Masterton, but we'll look at that nearer the time. This is Scott Miller's 20th year in drag racing, having star- tedasa6yearold. Scott Miller Motors is becom- ing a speed shop this month, selling performance V8 parts. Old cars on road less travelled Coastal Cruise: About 20 cars and 40 people took part in the weekend's Coastal Run, organised by the Wairarapa branch of the Vintage Car Club. The destination was historic Glenburn Station, which dates back to the days when all rural transport was by sea. Rally organiser Neville Taylor, the club chairman, is pictured in his 1965 MG on his way back to Carterton, where he and his wife Beth hosted an after- match barbecue.
