It is being built to 130 per cent of earthquake code. With the earthquake-risk former Masterton Opera House long gone, a super- sturdy $3 million structure is fast going up in its stead. Since the old brick build- ing was demolished last year many residents have been wondering what is going to be built in its place. Site owner Lands Trust Masterton is erecting a 1680 square metre building for new tenants from the health sector, including Pathways/ Care NZ. The new building has exceptionally strong foundations and will greatly exceed strength require- ments for earthquakes. In 2011 Pathways/Care NZ was awarded a Wai- rarapa DHB contract to pro- vide community-based men- tal health and addiction services for the region. The new building and its tenants will complement other health and social services in the Lincoln Rd area, including Masterton Medical. The two-storey building has been designed to provide open plan spaces that are flexible and informal. It will house more than 40 staff and include meeting rooms and a large glazed atrium allowing natural light to the lower floor. It will reflect and con- tain heritage elements of the former opera house building and meet high energy efficiency and environmental standards. A structural assessment of the 115-year-old opera house found that it met just seven per cent of seismic perform- ance standards for new buildings, was a major risk to life in the event of a mod- erate earthquake and could not be insured or feasibly made safe. The new building will meet 130 per cent of the code. Masterton Lands Trust secretary Garry Percy says the extra strengthening came at minimal cost so the trust thought it was a good idea to future-proof the building for the long term. Masterton-based construc- tion firm Rigg-Zschokke Ltd is the main contractor for the project which is due for com- pletion by the end of March.
