In charge of the largest area in the plant as far as staff numbers are concerned, team leader Vaughn Evans says his job certainly has its challenges, but he enjoys working with people and says the role is rewarding. A percentage of new workers at JNL chuck it in after a couple of weeks or a few months, but for Vaughn and many other stalwarts, the company has seen them right over the years. After 20 years with JNL, Vaughn knows that a good work ethic and dependability are well recognised, and he has lifted himself up from the bottom of the pile to a position of considerable responsibility. ''The company undoubtedly observes and rewards workers' initiative,'' he says. He has seen many faces come and go over the years and many people come back into the fold. ''If you leave on a good note, then they'll certainly take you back,'' he says. Vaughn is now team leader of the board line, which has 43 staff. He has been in charge of this area for nine months and is still gaining valuable knowledge from his experienced workers. Coming to JNL straight from secondary school when he was just 17, Vaughn has developed himself while at the company, which offers ongoing training and the opportunity to gain additional qualifications. ''It's great to have a qualification in First Line Management, as it gives me relevant knowledge and skills that help me in my team leader role.'' He is responsible for staff safety, training, production and maintenance schedules. While staying on top of the administration aspects of the job, Vaughn likes to spend as much time on the floor as possible and keep in contact with his team. He says that by keeping on top of the paper trail of projects, machine changes and systems, he is able to identify areas for improvement or pinpoint glitches and determine ways to remedy them. As a husband and father of two children, Vaughn is a family man who appreciates having a job where he is able to progress and advance himself. A wide set of skills Taki Vatselias: JNL stalwart. CONTINUED Page 35 Taki Vatselias is another JNL stalwart who knows the place inside and out. His role these days is out in the log yard preparing logs, but he has worked in many different areas of the plant. Having been at JNL for 20 years, he has found that the variety and challenges of each position keep him motivated. He likes being outdoors, and the tasks involved in prepping logs keep him fit and on his toes. He says it is handy to have experience with various machinery because it means he can jump on to a forklift or loader if someone is away.
