Aratoi Museum of Art and History is a decade old this week -- tomorrow, Febru- ary 9. A range of activities to commemorate Aratoi's 10th anniversary are being planned for the next few months, includ- ing an exhibition that traces Aratoi's his- tory back to the opening of the Wairarapa Arts Centre four decades ago. Marcus Boroughs, Aratoi's director, says: Many wonderful and exciting programmes have been produced over the last four decades, including the last 10 years at Aratoi. All of them used essential elements: research, creativity, collaboration and building relationships out in the com- munity.'' While this is a time to look back at what has been achieved, particularly over the last 10 years, it will also be exciting to unveil new plans and some significant changes,'' says Kirsty McDonald QC, Aratoi board chair. A number of new initiatives are in the wind, with the first a change of name for Aratoi's board of trustees. From Friday the Wairarapa Cultural Trust becomes the Aratoi Regional Trust. There are two principal reasons for the name change as Kirsty McDonald explains: Firstly, it has been confusing that there has been no obvious connection between the board that administers Aratoi and our two support organisations -- the Friends of Aratoi and the Aratoi Foun- dation.'' As well,'' she says, we wanted our name to reflect our commitment to the whole region. Our physical presence might be in Masterton, but we want to continue to develop our leading role in the cultural life of the whole valley.'' Ms McDonald says that her board is working closely with the Friends of Aratoi, the Aratoi Foundation and Aratoi staff to mount a wide-ranging anniver- sary programme.
