Having dispatched Manawatu, Hawke's Bay and more recently Taranaki, the boys from the Bush have been playing stellar cricket and are fully deserving of a long- awaited Hawke Cup challenge. Afterall, Horowhenua-Kapiti languish rock bottom of Zone Two and are yet to register a point this season. But with injuries taking their toll, coupled with question marks over key players, the big match will be no walkover. Greg Todd's recent recall to the Central Stags is the biggest head- ache for Wairarapa. The talented all-rounder has been masterful with both bat and ball in the Hawke Cup to date. While Todd's team-mates will be disappointed their captain failed with the bat for the Stags on Sunday against the Canterbury Wizards, the good news is that it might mean he is available for Hawke Cup duties this weekend. The Stags have one more quali- fying match in the one-day Ford Trophy, against Auckland Aces in New Plymouth today, ahead of the finals this weekend. With Stag Black Caps Doug Bracewell and Kruger van Wyk likely to return for the Stags squad, Todd could well find himself being pushed aside. Fellow all-rounder Dean van Deventer is officially unavailable having returned to Canterbury for study -- a huge blow for Wairarapa with the tall expressman in tremendous form this season. The availability of strike bowl- ers Seth Rance and Daniel Ingham will be determined at tonight's training with both players pulling up lame against Taranaki last month. Rance has a shoulder injury, Ingham a sore achilles. Rance rates himself a good chance to be fit with similar optimism around Ingham, who turned out for his club Lansdowne at the weekend bowling off a short run-up. Wairarapa coach Mark Brown is keeping his fingers crossed. In the event either player is not declared fit there are contingency plans in place, Brown says. We have two or three guys in the wings should those players not be available,'' Brown says. Whatever happens we'll cer- tainly have a team that will be very competitive.'' The match is being played in Waikanae. Win outright and Wairarapa is all but assured of a Hawke Cup challenge against cur- rent holders Hamilton. That match could be as early as the fol- lowing week. Burkhart sets the standard for motocross challengers Number One: Luke Burkhart celebrated a hat-trick of wins in the MX2 (250cc) class at the annual Woodville Motocross at the weekend. Photo: ANDY McGECHAN, BIKESPORTNZ.COM By ANDY McGECHAN Luke Burkhart has set the stan- dard for motocross racing this season and it is very high indeed. Burkhart, from Masterton, was in scintillating form at the 51st annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix at Woodville at the weekend and whether anybody will be able to match the CMR Motorex KTM rider in the big races that now follow remains to be seen. The New Zealand Motocross Championships kick off in South Canterbury later this month. Burkhart celebrated a hat-trick of wins in the senior MX2 class, beating national MX2 champion Darryll King of Hamilton and Queenstown international Scott Columb to the top of the podium. I've only ridden the bike two times since I last raced (at Whakatane just after Christmas) so to come here and win is pretty encouraging. It's a good buildup for the nationals,'' Burkhart said. I think my performance is a good warning to the other riders that I'm not here to muck around.''
