Renowned blues men to perform at Tin Hut World class: Australian guitarist Nick Charles. Blues fans are in for a double treat this week with two top acts playing at the Tin Hut. Tonight Australian Nick Charles is the guest of honour at the Cross Creek Blues Club monthly meeting and then on Friday, legendary Kiwi singer/songwriter Ralph Bennett- Eades performs. For Bennett-Eades it feels like he's been singing the blues ever since the world began'', and lately he's been introducing his new CD Everybody's Got A Lil' Somethin' to his fans and new-comers alike. It's a collection of blues and originals performed on his 1935 National steel guitar recorded live at the Fullmer Gallery in Nelson. I chose the room because of its great live sound,'' he says, and the fact that Steve Fullmer used to work at the National guitar factory in Cal- ifornia kind of made it seem perfect.'' Harmonica player Paul Denny joined his long-time partner in the Blues for the recording. The result is what Bennett-Eades describes as contemporary old school blues'' featuring not only songs by Elmore James and Son House but Delta-ised'' versions of Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead and Leon Russell. New originals like Man v Nature, Lil' Bit Loco, Embry- onic Blues, and the title track com- plete the package. Ralph Bennett-Eades has been a guest at the Cross Creek Blues Club with his band The Honey Badgers but this time he will play a solo acoustic set featuring some of the songs from his new CD. The prestigious Black Rose Acous- tic Society in Colorado, United States, describes Australian guitar- ist, Nick Charles, as a world class stylist and composer. His dazzling, melodic fingerpick- ing on six- and 12-string guitars, stinging slide and a lifetime's stories and songs from the musical highway has him labelled by the Melbourne Age as Australia's virtuoso of acous- tic roots and blues. During an extensive and acclaimed career, Charles has released many albums on major roots and guitar music labels. Nick Charles, Wednesday, February 1 from 7.15pm Tin Hut; Ralph Bennett-Eades, Friday, February 3, Tin Hut.
