Photo: PHIL BRAZIER Wairarapa is on the brink of a rare Hawke Cup challenge follow- ing another stunning performance in the representative cricket elimination series. The Hawke Cup is the holy grail of provincial representative cricket in New Zealand. Wairarapa has not earned a Cup challenge since 1987. The weekend s outright win over Zone Two leaders Taranaki puts them on equal points at the top of the table but with a plum draw going into the final qualify- ing round. The Greg Todd captained side is down to play cellar dwellers Horowhenua-Kapiti while Tara- naki has a tough assignment in Palmerston North against Mana- watu. The two-day matches are scheduled for February 4 and 5. The weekend s thumping of Taranaki follows back-to-back first innings wins over Central District s heavyweights Mana- watu and Hawke s Bay. Coach Mark Brown says it was a terrific performance made all the more difficult by the fact that Wairarapa was without strike bowlers Seth Rance and Daniel Ingham for the second innings. Both players went down with injuries and Wairarapa was forced to call on all their resources using seven bowlers in the second innings. The boys that were able to remain on the park dug deep and were able to do it, Brown says. Brown says Rance, who injured his bowling shoulder, should be okay to play against Horowhenua- Kapiti on February 4-5, but he is less optimistic about Ingham s chances after an Achilles injury. Winning the toss and electing to bat on a green wicket Wairarapa made a solid start with the open- ing pair of Jamie Holmes (53) and Tim Lucas (26) putting on 61. When Lucas was out Henry Cameron (91) came to the wicket taking charge of the Taranaki bowlers. He featured in a 118-run stand for the third wicket with Greg Todd (51). With a big score beckoning Wairarapa lost their way in the middle order but an innings of 42 by number ten batsman Dean van Deventer saw them get through a competitive 333. Taranaki finish day one on 22 without loss but the second morn- ing started badly with only one run added before the loss of the first wicket. From there the wickets tumbled and soon the visiting side were reeling at 68-7 before being rolled for a paltry 101. Forced to follow on, Taranaki got through to 30 without loss before the first wicket fell. Dangerman Dion Ebrahim came and went without scoring, and so the procession began again, Tara- naki slumping to 104-6. At 158-7 in the 54th over, Taranaki had 23 overs to see out until the end of the match, but the resistance fell just 3.1 overs short. They were all out for 216 -- 16 runs short of mak- ing Wairarapa bat again. Wairarapa 333 (Jamie Holmes 51, Henry Cameron 91, Greg Todd 51, Dean van Deventer 42, Jason Dromboski 4-64, James McDoug- all 4-30) beat Taranaki 101 (Dean van Deventer 4-38) & 216 (Travis Stewart 54no, Tom Bruce 63; Ben Foster 4-44, Dean Van Deventer 2-39, Greg Todd 2-31).
