Bonding: Nicole Baker and son Tommy Yee, 12 weeks, from Carterton at the Big Latch On. Photos: ANNA CAMPBELL There was a great turnout of Wairarapa mothers at the YMCA in Masterton on Friday, August 5 to take part in the annual breastfeeding marathon. The Masterton YMCA was one of 133 venues throughout the country where breastfeed- ing mothers participated in the Big Latch On. Forty-four mothers attended the event and 40 were counted as latched on'' at the official time of 10.30am. For many, this was their first time, but many others are regular participants. Morning tea was provided by an enthusiastic team of bakers from Whaiora who were ably supported by Plunket and the Wairarapa DHB Maternity Unit. The event was supported by the Baby Friendly Coalition with sponsorship from the YMCA, Masterton Toy Library and many local businesses. Nationally, the New Zea- land record set last year of 1514 women breastfeeding simultaneously was broken this year with 1564 babies latching on simultaneously. More than 176 countries participate in World Breas- tfeeding Week events involv- ing more than 409,480 celebrants. The Big Latch On celebrates breastfeeding mums and babies; promotes the benefits of breastfeeding for babies, mums and society at large; and sends a message that breastfeeding in public is acceptable and will be supported. It is a great oppor- tunity to get community rec- ognition of the great work breastfeeding mothers are doing.
