Giving the best milk for babies Determination can go a long way when it comes to seeing things through, and it was determination that Antonette Sail needed in droves when she had problems breastfeed- ing her new baby, Isaac. A first-time mum from the isolated settlement of Mataikona, Ms Sails said it all went well at first, but after about two weeks her nipples were cracked and sore and she was dreading the next feed. I had decided before his birth that I would breastfeed him but it was just getting more and more painful and I was getting more and more upset. Who wants to feel dread towards their own baby? Living so far out of town meant that help felt quite far away for Antonette and her partner, crayfi- sherman Brad Borrie. They tried calling a lactation consultant but she was away, and while calls to Plun- ketline and searching on the internet yielded plenty of helpful advice, breastfeeding continued to be agonis- ing. In the end, it was her partner who suggested the solution that worked for them. Brad suggested I try using a breast pump, Antonette says. He must have been paying attention at antenatal classes! I couldn t get into town for a few days, so I hand expressed for two days, then bought the gentlest pump I could find. I thought it might hurt but it didn t at all, and after about five days of Isaac drinking expressed milk from a bottle, he was back breastfeeding and we haven t had any problems since. It felt a bit weird that Brad would go away and spend time with friends and obviously talk about the trouble we were having, says Antonette. But it turns out that lots of their partners had the same problems and they all had ideas about how to help. It was unexpected but really encour- aging -- and it meant that I didn t feel so alone with it either. Antonette s mother was also a great source of encouragement and advice, having breastfed her own four children and experienced simi- lar difficulties. She knew how much it could hurt, but she also knew how much I wanted to breastfeed. Isaac was fine with the bottle, but even though he had the nourish- ment, the bottle s just not the same comfort. Breastfeeding helped him settle better and it makes a baby s immune system stronger. It also makes you as a mum happier, because more endorphins get released. And breastfeeding defi- nitely helps you lose weight! The convenience of breastfeeding is a really big plus. I was so relieved to get back to it because it s just a one-step process. If I lived in town, maybe I would have just thrown my hands up in the air and said fine, I ll just have to give him formula . But because I really wanted to continue being a breastfeeding mother I had to per- severe. And in the end it was our own devices that got us though.
